A promise about money is worth nothing without the arithmetic beside it. So here is the arithmetic, and it stays here whether the number is flattering or not.

The prize pool this season is ฿250,000, and every baht of it is still seeded by the non-profit itself. That is the number this board exists to change.

The rule

Every baht a school pays to list goes into the prize fund. We keep none of it.

Not a management fee, not an admin cut, not "costs first". The fee is not revenue — it is a transfer, from a school that needs a teacher to a child who stood up on a stage.

The non-profit's costs — hosting, domains, the drive to the venue, printing the score sheets — and the two teachers' expenses are the only things paid out before prizes; no one draws a wage. If that ever changes we will say so on this page, in numbers, before we change anything.

How this is set up. USAEnglish is run as a non-profit — a Thai non-profit organization, 49% owned by a US 501(c)(3). Ploy and Ben take no salary; only their actual expenses are reimbursed. Neither of them takes any profit, as it should be. The registration numbers will be published here the day they are issued, so anyone can check them; until then, write to ben@usaenglish.com and we will tell you where the filing stands.

What the prize money actually does

Thailand already runs a storytelling competition in every education service area — งานศิลปหัตถกรรมนักเรียน. It has run for decades. It is free to enter. Children compete in English at four age bands, and the winners receive a certificate and a medal grade.

There has never been any money in it.

Ploy won it in 2010, at Ban Han Hee School in Rattanaburi, Surin — a girl from a village who taught herself English from cassette tapes. She got a certificate. It is on the wall, and it is on USAEnglish.com.

A certificate is worth a great deal. ฿10,000 in a village in Roi Et is worth something else again — and it tells a child, and more importantly her parents, that the thing she is good at has value. That is what a school's listing fee buys.

How we will report it
